WUNZ Apparel in Action is a social enterprise committed to impacting the lives of women and men who have experienced homelessness and are coming through recovery. Through our Make It Work pilot program, we will teach the basics of a trade in an environment that supports personal development and community-building.
WUNZ is crowd-sourcing to help launch our job creation program in partnership with the Los Angeles Mission. We are building a pilot program to train 6-10 women coming through the Anne Douglas Center for Women's recovery program to create a product and bring it to market. Our goal is to scale the program through workforce development agencies, utilizing LA’s vast manufacturing resources to create new job opportunities for women. Our mission is to create high-quality apparel while building community through purposeful work, self-development, and wealth creation.
I started WUNZ from my own need to rebuild my life after a trauma. I built the Supersuit for myself as a new skin – a way of wearing the most powerful version of myself in the world. I started the business after reading Blake Mycoskie’s (Toms Shoes) book Start Something That Matters in order to do something to impact the devastating crisis of homelessness in my city. I developed a partnership with the Los Angeles Mission, created a giveback program, and began doing service through teaching job preparedness.
Because my intention has always been to build a brand that could eventually employ the community I aim to serve, learning about workforce development was very exciting for me. To be able to hire people and help teach trade and business skills while building community and growing the company is my dream. With the help and support of the Los Angeles Mission as well as a cadre of incredible mentors, I am launching our first pilot program early next year.
I’m thrilled to invite you to participate by supporting our inaugural program! Please contact me if you’d like to know more about the program we are developing and my long-range goals for it.
The Supersuit! I spent 4 years designing and making prototypes for this jumpsuit (7 total). It had to be something that made me feel invincible out in the world while being practical, sexy, and washable. You'll love the heavy zipper, the minky pockets, and of course, the tiny red cape on the back!
The Supersuit is a canvas for personal expression, so why not start by personalizing it with your name embroidered above the pocket? This reward also comes with an embossed hoodie and a pen/journal set!
I am still working out the details on this incentive - ideally we meet at the Los Angeles Mission for a tour and either share a meal there or at a nearby spot. I would love to share this very special place with you and more details about the Make it Work program.
Your first or last name (or whatever name you like) will be the name of the next iteration of the Supersuit! We have several sketches of the next few versions, so we'd love your input as well as your name to define the next round of Supersuits.
